History of Jiffy Mix – A Family Owned Company
Jiffy Mix is made by the Chelsea Milling Company, a family-owned business that has been around for over 100 years. It was founded by Harmon S. Holmes in 1901 as a flour mill.
Around the start of the Great Depression, Mabel White Holmes, the daughter-in-law of Harmon, pondered how the family business could help people who had been affected by the economy.
Around this time, Mabel noticed that a friend of her twin sons came by and had flat, lethargic-looking biscuits in his lunch.
She decided she’d find a way to make a pre-made Mix that would help make better biscuits. The little boy’s dad was a single father and could use the help.
In 1930, Mabel’s creation became the first prepared baking Mix for sale to the public. All it needed was a little milk, and it made perfect biscuits every time.
The brand, Jiffy, grew from there by providing affordable baking Mixes that delivered the best results.

Today, Jiffy is still one of the top brands in prepared muffin Mixes. It’s still committed to families and America with a mission to provide the best possible value through high-quality ingredients at a low price.
How is Jiffy Mix made?
The factory is in Michigan, in a place called Chelsea, located near Ann Arbor. The assembly line makes 1.6 million boxes a day. These boxes are sent around the country and to 32 countries, too.
The brand takes great pride in sourcing its ingredients as locally as possible. As such, all the sugar used comes from Michigan, too.
There are now 18 varieties of Jiffy Mix, so grab one and give it a try while supporting America!
Best Ways to Use Jiffy Mix In Your Recipes
With Jiffy Mix, you can make tons of things. The Mixes themselves can be used as the boxes instruct.
If you’re not a fan of baking from scratch, you can’t go wrong by following a box of Jiffy Mix.
But you can also deviate from the directions to make these recipes your own. I have made Jiffy cornbread the traditional oven-baked way and in the air fryer (yes, you can make air fryer cornbread!).
I’ve also made Jiffy jalapeño cornbread which is great if you like some spice, and Jiffy cornbread with creamed corn for those who would prefer not to take any heat.
You can try my recipe for Jiffy corn pudding. I also have a Jiffy corn pudding in the slow cooker, which is great for holidays.

Speaking of holidays, Jiffy cornbread dressing is one that always disappears fast once I serve it.
I’ve made hush puppies, Jiffy pancakes, and meatloaf with Jiffy, too.
You can start with my recipes and check back often because I will most certainly continue to use Jiffy Mix in my kitchen. We love it around here.

Jiffy Mix vs. Homemade Mix: Which is Better?
Jiffy Mix has been a baking staple for generations, but is it better than homemade? Well, that really depends on your tastes. Much of the time, when I make Jiffy Mix, no one realizes it came from a box.
You can make Jiffy Mix as the box instructs or add stuff to it to create your own recipes. I love that it’s versatile this way.
It can also save you time. I’ve had gatherings where I needed to make cornbread, and having this mix handy was a huge time-saver.
Some things you make take time, and if you’ve got that time to do it from scratch, that’s wonderful. But other times, you may be too short on time and need a reliable mix.
There are also plenty of people out there who do not know how to bake.
Having products like Jiffy Mix available that deliver reliable results every time makes them more comfortable with baking, allowing them to start exploring the possibilities they can make from that one little box.

The Benefits of Using Jiffy Mix
Using Jiffy Mix is great because:
- It’s affordable, and with prices the way they are, every little bit you can save truly counts.
- It’s versatile, allowing you the option to follow the box or use it in your own recipes.
- It’s reliable – I’ve never had anything turn out badly when I use Jiffy Mix.
- Convenience is a big one, too – there are moments when you need to whip up something quick, and Jiffy Mix always has you covered.
- You’ll save time too…While I do love baking things from scratch, time can absolutely make fools of us all. Jiffy Mix gives me more time to spend with the people I love most.

Jiffy Mix Hacks and Tips for Baking Success
Jiffy Mix is a budget-friendly baking solution for American families.
This brand became a household name by truly serving America what it needed, filling a huge void in the kitchen, and bringing families together.
The iconic blue packaging makes it instantly recognizable on shelves, perhaps as a way to beckon to you that you can make blue-ribbon recipes right out of the box.
But you can also use some tips and tricks to jazz things up and make them your own.
For the Jiffy cornbread mix, you can add ingredients like:
- Maple syrup or honey
- Sour cream
- Shredded cheese
- Bacon
- Jalapeños
- Corn
- Brown sugar
- Berries
As I said, it is so versatile that you can use it as a base to create anything.

Jiffy Mix: The Perfect Addition to Your Pantry
Jiffy Mix really is one of those staples you need in your pantry.
With the cornbread mix, you can make so many things (just see my recipes if you need inspiration).
Cornbread muffins are also a snap with this handy mix.
This little blue box truly revolutionized home baking at a time when many baking staples became unaffordable.
Even though our country endured the Great Depression, this humble mix has always been popular for home baking ever since that time.
Now more than ever, it still gives us an affordable way to bake for our families.
At its very roots of creation, its intent was to help make delicious baked goodies for those that either couldn’t afford to bake from scratch or simply didn’t know how.
Now, this versatile ingredient can be used in all types of cooking. I have an awesome meatloaf recipe using Jiffy Mix that you’ve got to try.
When you have Jiffy Mix in your pantry, you can pretty much do anything!

How Jiffy Mix Keeps it Traditional
Things change, but some things stay traditional, which is something Jiffy Mix aims to do. It has had such an impact on American cuisine, despite never advertising or offering coupons.
I love that this brand truly has stuck to its roots. In fact, it really hasn’t changed at all, keeping the focus on quality ingredients that are sourced locally in Michigan.
You’ll see so many other brands attempt to revolve or adapt to changing tastes and trends, but not Jiffy Mix. They know they have amazing products.
Jiffy Mix sticks to the traditional, which is why it remains so versatile.
It allows you to get creative by giving you a basic format. According to Howdy Holmes, the great-grandson of the founder of Jiffy Mix, they are focused on that value at the core.
That means quality ingredients at a low price. He’s stated that the brand will never come out with odd flavors like lime, kiwi, or other options because they’re a staple supplier.
It’s why Jiffy Mix is a source of nostalgia for many Americans. It reminds us of baking with our grandmothers and mothers.
It brings our families together in the kitchen, and that’s what really is at the heart of American families and old-fashioned family values.

How Jiffy Mix Has Inspired Home Cooks and Bakers
It may be basic, but there’s something great about Jiffy Mix. To have baked goods ready in a “jiffy” gives new cooks and bakers a taste of success in the kitchen.
Once you get comfortable making what’s in the Jiffy Mix box, you feel more comfortable exploring outside those confines.
This is why Jiffy Mix still serves as a base for many of us – even me, who loves to bake from scratch – to add our own personal touches.
It’s a family tradition for so many households too. While some people love it, there are definitely some that don’t.

But going back to the beginning of Jiffy Mix, it was created as a way to bring families together in the heart of the home, the kitchen.
You can add things to it to reflect your own tastes and enhance it to your palate.
I simply love that the creators of Jiffy Mix did so with a heart of intent to help someone else.
Now that legacy endures as millions of people use this simple blue-topped box in their kitchens to create something special to enjoy around the table together.

How to Store Jiffy Mix?
Thankfully, Jiffy Mix is packaged in such a way that it stays fresh.
You should keep your boxes of mix in a cool and dry place, like your pantry.
You should also keep track of the date listed under “best if used by” on your box.
Jiffy Mix can be stored longer by putting the package itself into a plastic freezer bag.
You can then seal it and put it in the refrigerator or freezer.
If you do choose to refrigerate or freeze the mix, you should make sure you let it come to room temperature before you use it.

Is Jiffy Mix Gluten-Free?
If you can’t have gluten, then you will need to stay away from Jiffy Mix. There are no versions of it without gluten. Each box contains wheat flour in the ingredients.
No matter what your meal plans are, be sure to include some Jiffy Mix. There are so many different types that you will fall in love with the brand.
And Jiffy is not just for savory dishes; you can make a variety of recipes with Jiffy blueberry muffin mix, such as cookies, cobbler, and muffins.

I love Jiffy Mix! I use it as a corn meal coating for my catfish, as well as the traditional uses for corn bread.
It’s great stuff! Perfect for coating catfish!
@Julie Pollitt,
Jiffy cornbread mix is to sweet. I make my cornbread from scratch and there is no sugar. Now, I have made muffins with their cornbread mix and added blueberries and it was good. I might try to make a 8 inch round cake using the mix along with fresh peaches and cinnamon, that sounds delicious.
That sounds wonderful with peaches and cinnamon! What a great idea.
I live less than one hundred miles from Chelsea, Michigan and have been at the factory.
My wife and I love all of the mixes we have tried. The Jiffy mixes are just the right size for two of us.
Varying the recipes is most of the fun.
I once hosted chili night at our house. I made a big pot of my signature chili and three batches of Jiffy corn muffins. One batch was plain. One batch had grated Monterey Jack cheese. The third batch had Monterey Jack and finely diced Cowboy Candy (candied jalapenos). Thirty nine muffins total. We had three muffins (two plain and one with the jalapenos) and a pint and a half of chili left over. I figured I fixed plenty for the eight people there but not too much.
My mother also played with the corn muffin mix. We had gone up to the cabin one year when the wild blueberries really went wild. You couldn’t turn around and not see at least a couple of handfuls of blueberries.
Mom had forgotten to bring all of the ingredients for pancakes. She did have a box of corn muffin mix. Corn and blueberry pancakes are great!
My wife and I keep a box of the brownie mix on hand. It’s the best size for us. Chocolate chips are a good addition. So is two ounces of softened cream cheese mixed with a tablespoon or two of sugar marbled in.
Or you can in an oven proof skillet cook a couple of peeled and thinly sliced apples until soft. Add brown sugar and caramelize. Even the apples out add a mixed yellow cake batter and bake. After baking wait five minutes and invert over a plate.I sprinkle a little sea salt on top. Apple upside down cake!
Yes, we love Jiffy.
And now I am totally drooling over all of these things! Thanks so much for sharing. Jiffy is so good and super budget-friendly. I will have to try the candied jalapeños. Sounds good!
Jiffy cornbread is the only one I like!
Such good stuff!
Great ideas to work with thank you
Love Jiffy Cornbread mix! Being from MI, It was made every weekend (I was born in the 50’s).
I have two little blue boxes in my pantry right now.
I add jalapeños or Mikes Extra Hot honey, sometime both, when I make my Jiffy.
Love the story.
Looking forward to make the corn casserole.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing! I love those little blue boxes! I’ve never heard of Mike’s Extra Hot Honey. I will have to try it sometime.
1st I have never read such a well versed article . How poignant and humble , informative and interesting 🤔
Pointing out the variety of uses and clear instructions, reminded me of my childhood , 60 years ago ☺️ The ‘delicious’ smell and quick snack or addition to any meal stand out to me 👍
Thank you for not selling a ‘product’ but sharing a kitchen staple for true home taste .
I hope some of the younger generations buy this for their meals , single or married .
Again great article and great food product 🙌
Thank you so much!
Love it ❤️
Thank you!
Is there any Jiffy Cornbread Mix without sugar in it??
Also, do they have genetically modified ingredients in the mix,
if so, my son won’t let me buy it!
Thanks,
Evelyn
Hi Evelyn,
I think most of the mixes do have sugar. Here’s a copycat recipe that only calls for about five ingredients and you can leave the sugar out, if you’d like to. I hope it helps! https://www.savoryexperiments.com/copycat-jiffy-cornbread-muffin-mix/
Take the box of Jiffy mix add suggested mix items but 1/2 cup milk instead of 1/3 cup of milk. and add a teaspoon of coco chocolate powder, a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and about 1/2 teaspoon of fish sauce (optional but solidifies taste) and a tablespoon of oil. Then add a scattering of ground nuts or sun flower seeds. Bake in a 8×8 pan or similar round container in a 400 degree oven for 11 to 13 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick coming clean to test. Totally different but super desirable here
Wow, that sounds amazing!
I love Jiffy mixes but grocery stores don’t always carry them.
Oh darn! Have you tried ALdis? I usually find it there.
I’m a little confused, you said in your article title “All About Jiffy Mix”, but All you talk about is the corn bread mix. I saw the list in your article of their other products. Anyway do you have any recipes for the Jiffy Golden Yellow Cake Mix?
Hi Su,
I am sorry to confuse you. I don’t have any recipes for the yellow cake mix, but I need to get on that and make some! Jennifer over at Plowing Through Life has a recipe with Jiffy Cake Mix that is so good! https://plowingthroughlife.com/church-cake/
