This simple recipe is one I make often because it always creates a delicious meal.
Don’t forget to save some of the cheese to put on top. You can also add chopped green onions for contrast when serving.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Start by cooking the raw ground beef, onion seasoning, and garlic in a large skillet. When the ground beef is done, drain the grease.

Next, add the cooked ground beef to a heat-safe bowl and add the cream of chicken and cream of cheese soup. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on top and mix well.

Place some of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the slow cooker.
I cut the potatoes about 1/4″ thick with a mandolin.

Spoon some of the ground beef mixture over the potatoes.

Sprinkle a handful of shredded cheese on top and repeat two to three more times.

After several layers, finish with shredded cheese on top.

Pour the heavy cream on top of the ingredients. If you don’t have heavy cream, that is fine. You can use milk for the recipe. Heavy cream just adds some rich flavor to the meal.

Place the lid on top of the Crock Pot and cook for 7 to 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high.

The food will be done when the potatoes are soft.

Can I prep this the night before?
Hi Emily,
You can, but you will need to make sure your potatoes don’t get brown. You can slice them and place them into a bowl of water and keep refrigerated. Hope you love the dish!
@Julie Pollitt, I ended up putting everything (except the cream) in the inside of the crock pot and put it in the fridge. Let it sit out a little bit, added the cream and started it. Fingers crossed it works lol This recipe looks awesome! Can’t wait to try it tonight!
Let me know how you like it! I hope you do love it. 🙂
After nine hours the potatoes are still raw. I even turned the temperature to high the last two hours. My crockpot is very reliable and the potatoes were thinly sliced. The meat had nice flavor.
Hi,
I am glad you liked the flavor. Did you have a good seal on the top of your Crock Pot? That could have kept them from cooking properly.
I used 2 pounds thawed cubed hash brown potatoes, and just added to the dutch oven pot when meat was cooked, along with rest of ingredients except the cheese and let it simmer till done. Add in cheese and turn the heat off and let sit covered a few minutes, then it stirs in easily. It took around half an hour.
That sounds good! How did you like it that way? Thanks for sharing so we can try it, too!

looks really good but I think instead of putting a dried onion I would just chop up an onion probably saute it in a little bit of butter or olive oil before putting it in
That is always a good plan!!
I switched out cream of cheddar cheese soup for cream of mushroom soup since there’s so much cheddar cheese already. I also added 1 block of cream cheese, diced, and stirred 30 minutes before serving.
That’s what I love about this recipe – versatility! I hope you loved it!
Fantastic flavor. I had my girls make this entirely, including safely using the mandolin. I showed them Julie’s step by step photos so they could replicate. They did such a good job and it turned out delicious. They also chose her cookie recipe 1 to make. Yum…it was good, too. I wanted my girls to be able to break down a recipe and see just how easy it can be, as well as rewarding. Thank you, Julie.
I love to hear this! It sounds like they did a fantastic job! Thank you so much for sharing!
