How To Make the Slow Cooker Tater Tot Casserole

Start by adding about half of the tater tots to the bottom of the slow cooker and spread them out. Next, cook the onions and garlic until translucent in a large skillet on medium heat. Then, brown the ground beef with the onions and garlic. Drain the grease.

Mix the beef, salt, pepper, sour cream, condensed soup, milk, and one cup of shredded cheese until combined. Pour over the tater tots in the slow cooker.

Next, top the meat mixture with the remainder of the shredded cheese. Then, add the rest of the tater tots on top of the cheese. Place the lid on top and bake on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours.

If you want crispy tater tots, stick the Crock Pot “crock” under the broiler for about five minutes (make sure your Crock Pot is safe in the oven and only place the crock inside. Do not place the lid in the oven).

Optional Ingredients

Sometimes it’s fun to switch things up a bit and change the flavor of the dish. Here are a few ideas.

  • Add some taco seasoning to the beef.
  • Use ground turkey for a lower-fat dinner.
  • Switch out the ground beef for shredded chicken.
  • Worcestershire sauce for a kick of flavor.
  • Bell peppers diced into the dinner.

Notes

Watch the crock under the broil setting, as it can burn fast.
