If you’ve been to Back To My Southern Roots before, you’ll know how much I love to make things with sweetened condensed milk. It makes the blandest dessert amazing.
Let me give a little history on the good stuff. It was introduced just before the Civil War in an effort to fight food poisoning. What a wonderful treat to avoid poisoning!
During the Civil War, the soldiers needed milk that would keep, and sweetened condensed milk did the trick.
According to the Eagle Brand website the company held a contest in 1931 for, “recipes in which Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk makes cooking quicker, easier, and surer.” They got 80,000 recipes mailed to the company.
I wonder if my great-grandmother submitted a recipe? She and my grandmother had so many recipes with sweetened condensed milk, including homemade ice cream.
Now, the company offers the original, low-fat, fat-free, and caramel (and they’ve even had chocolate flavored – oh my).
If you wanted to make caramel at home, you can do it with just the can.
- Remove the wrapper and place the can into a saucepan. Cover with water 1-inch to 2-inches above the can.
- Bring to a boil (when it boils, make sure the water doesn’t evaporate and get below the can lid).
- Reduce to low and simmer for 1-1/2 hours.
- Flip the can over and let it simmer one more hour.
- Let the cans cool.
- Open after they have cooled.
Condensed milk dessert recipes are perfect for any occasion, especially the holidays.
