The layered pudding dessert is easy to make and oh-so-hard to put down. You’re gonna fall in love with this lush dessert.

Butterscotch Delight

Butterscotch Lush Dessert is a delicious treat and is perfect for any potluck or party.

Hands down, this lush dessert is one of my favorite desserts. It is so rich and delicious and amazing. I mean, ah-maze-ing.

The recipe features creamy layers and a mouthwatering butterscotch center.

One of the great things about this butterscotch dessert is that you can use any flavor pudding that you like, such as chocolate, vanilla, or any of your favorites.

The recipe is perfect for those summer potlucks when you want a cool refreshing dessert on hot summer days.

This is the perfect layered treat to take to a potluck or party. But, be sure to take copies of the recipe because people are going to ask for it–beg for it, even!

The layered butterscotch pudding dessert is rich enough that you won’t even need to cut the pieces very large.

That’s kind of hard to say because I love large pieces of pretty much any dessert.

But, this one is filling and that’s a good thing because then there is more to go around.

Simple Recipe Step-By-Step Instructions

How to Make the Crust

Picture of flour and butter in a bowl

Add the flour and melted butter to a bowl and mix together.

For this recipe, you also have several crust options.

You can use the flour and butter crust like I am showing here, you can make a graham cracker crust, or you can make a pecan crust.

Graham Cracker Crust

  • 1-3/4 cups crushed graham crackers (or buy pre-crushed graham cracker crumbs)
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted butter

Pecan Crust

  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
Crust in a glass bowl.

Press the flour and butter mixture into a greased baking dish. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

The crust layer is the only part of the recipe you will have to bake.

Allow the crust to cool a little bit before adding the cream cheese layer.

How to Make the Cream Cheese Layer

Cream cheese in a glass bowl.

Firstly, add the softened cream cheese to a large bowl.

Cream cheese always softens desserts. It adds a creaminess that balances out the sweetness of this dessert.

Secondly, add the powdered sugar to the cream cheese and cream together with a hand mixer.

Cream cheese and whipped topping in a glass bowl.

Thirdly, add the whipped topping to the bowl and mix everything together.

This layer really makes the dessert.

For this recipe, I used thawed Cool Whip.

And fourthly, spread the cream cheese mixture over the top of the crust and set aside.

How to Make the Butterscotch Pudding Layer

Instant pudding powder in a glass bowl.

Start off by pouring the instant butterscotch pudding into a bowl. Add the milk and beat until the pudding thickens.

This is the easy part. I always love to see pudding go from powder to pudding in just one step.

Secondly, spread the pudding mixture over the cream cheese mixture.

You’re getting there. I had a really hard time keeping a spoon out of the dish and sampling it while making it. I’m telling you, it’s not easy.

How to Make the Whipped Topping Layer

Last and easiest step! Spread the second container of whipped cream topping on top of the pudding layer.

Place the dessert in the fridge for a couple of hours to get it good and cold. It will be a lot easier to cut up when it’s colder.

Unless you want to just get a spoon and go to town and forget all about cutting or sharing.

I won’t tell. I promise…mainly because I’m guilty of doin’ it myself.

Growing up, we always referred to this as "Mrs. Pickering's Dessert" because she was a dear saint in our church who always brought a pan of this to potlucks or funeral dinners. Brings back great memories for me! Thank you for sharing the recipe. I'm visiting from Meal Plan Monday on SouthernPlate.
