Ingredients
- Salted butter, softened
- Garlic, minced
- Fresh thyme, minced
- Fresh rosemary, minced
- Fresh parsley, minced
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Fresh sourdough bread (or other bread with a crunchy crust)
Special Ingredients
- Disposable paper cup
- Wick clip
- Cotton wick
- Chopstick or any other clip that can hold the wick centerย
Step-By-Step Instructions
Gather your ingredients for the butter. Grab the cotton wick and thread one end through the wick clip with the flat side facing away from the top of the wick.
Lie the cup on its side and measure the length of the wick youโll need for the wick clip to rest in the bottom of the cup. Have it reach all the way to the top, plus a few additional inches.
Cut the wick beneath the flat end of the wick clip and tie a small knot to keep the wick from pulling through.
Pull the wick until the knot meets the bottom of the wick clip and set the wick plus clip inside of the cup. Set it aside. (You will not be poking a hole in the cup. The wick clip just sits down in the cup).
Add the softened butter, garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, salt, and pepper to a medium bowl. Stir to combine the ingredients.
TIP: Microwave the butter a little at a time so that you can evenly mix everything, but DO NOT fully melt it, as the herbs may settle to the bottom. Taste and adjust seasonings to your desired taste. Spoon or pour the butter into the cup. You may need to hold the wick so it doesnโt become buried in the butter.
Gently adjust the wick to the center and use a chopstick or other clip to hold the wick in place. Place the cup in the refrigerator until completely set, one to two hours.
After the butter has solidified in the refrigerator, grab your loaf of bread and use the cup to cut a circle for the candle. But donโt cut through the bottom of the bread. Continue to cut slices in a circle around the hole in the center, again not cutting through the bottom.
Continue to cut slices in a circle around the hole in the center, again not cutting all the way through the bottom. When ready to serve, make a cut in the side of the paper cup and peel it off the butter candle. Discard the cup.
Trim the wick to approximately 1/2 inch in length. Gently place the candle in the middle of the loaf of bread and light the wick!
As the butter candle melts, your guests can take a piece of bread and dip it into the melted butter around the flame. And as the butter melts, it will slowly infuse the rest of the bread with delicious garlic-herb butter.
Do not eat the wick.
The recipe is great for any party, especially around the holidays.
