How To Make Caramel Popcorn

Butter and brown sugar in a saucepan with a spatula.

Step 2: Add the butter, brown sugar, salt, and corn syrup to a medium saucepan and mix it up over medium heat.

Step 5: Lay the popcorn out on a tray with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Sprinkle with a small amount of salt.

Tip

Do not use wax paper. It will stick to the popcorn, and removing it can be a significant task โ€“ I speak from experience.

Optional Step

The next step is optional, offering a chance to transform your homemade treat into a gourmet dessert. If you decide to omit this step, the caramel will retain its addictive toffee-like texture and be stickier and chewier but still taste as delicious as a batch of holiday caramel candies.

However, if you choose to bake it, the caramel undergoes a process of caramelization, hardening into a delightful caramel coating, and the taste becomes just as amazing, if not more so.

Step 6: Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Turn the popcorn a couple of times while baking. Ignoring this step is ok, but know that the caramel might pool at the bottom. You can see that some of mine did, and itโ€™s just fine.

Variations and Additions to Try

Let it cool and serve! You can add things like sprinkles, M&Ms, conversation hearts, or whatever sounds good. You can even add peanuts and make it a bit more of a Cracker Jack treat. Imagine the joy of biting into the gourmet dessert and tasting the addictive caramelized coating โ€“ it’s like a holiday season in the mouth!

Storing and Packaging the Candy

The popcorn does not need to be refrigerated. Be sure to keep it in a Ziplock bag or airtight container to keep it fresh.
