Even if you’ve never had southern praline pecan candy, you’ll absolutely adore the flavors.

It really is the perfect cake, and since it’s such an easy recipe that always has everyone raving for more, you will most certainly make it whenever you have the chance.

Ingredients For Southern Praline Pecan Cake

Cake Ingredients

  • Duncan Hines Yellow Cake
  • Sour cream
  • Vegetable oil
  • Eggs
  • Chopped pecans
  • Melted butter
  • Heavy cream
  • Brown sugar

Butter Sauce Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Chopped pecans

How to Make This Pecan Praline Cake Recipe

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray the baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Add the cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, sour cream, butter, cream, and brown sugar to a bowl and mix with an electric mixer.
  3. Next, add the pecans and fold them in.
  4. Pour the cake into a greased 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  5. When the cake is done baking, start the butter sauce by adding some butter to a saucepan.
  6. Melt the butter on low heat.
  7. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the saucepan and stir until hot.
  8. Add the pecans and pour the yummy sauce over the cake. You can either pour over the entire cake or one piece at a time.

Just a fair warning to y’all, this cake is so rich, but it’s so good too. I felt like I melted away with each bite.

My husband was apparently talking to me, but I didn’t hear a word he said. I was so busy enjoying my slice of cake.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Praline Pecan Cake

Start by adding the cake mix to a large mixing bowl.

You can use a box of butter pecan cake mix or yellow cake mix for this.

These make a good base to work with, and if you’ve never really baked, you’ll find this recipe will help you step out of your comfort zone just a little bit more.

Pour the melted butter into the bowl next.

Sour cream in a bowl with cake mix, butter, and vegetable oil. The ingredients haven't been mixed yet.

Add the sour cream to the bowl.

The sour cream is going to help make the cake more moist.

Pour the heavy cream into the bowl.

Next, add the brown sugar to the bowl and mix the ingredients with a hand mixer.

Spread the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until the top is light and golden brown and a cake tester comes out clean.

Pecan Butter Sauce

Cook the sauce after the cake is done baking.

Add the butter to a small saucepan and melt on low heat.

Pouring sweetened condensed milk into a saucepan with melted butter.

Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the saucepan after the butter melts and cook on low until it’s hot.

If it takes a while to get hot, you can turn the burner up to medium heat, but keep an eye on it.

Once you are done cooking the sauce, pour it over the whole cake or over individual slices of cake.

  • Next, pour the sweetened condensed milk into the saucepan after the butter melts and stir. Cook until hot.
  • Add the pecans and stir.
  • Pour the butter sauce over one slice of cake or the entire cake.

Notes

I put the butter sauce in a glass measuring cup to pour over the cake more easily. Be sure to stir it often because the pecans will float to the top quickly and you don't want all of your pecans on one slice.
If the low setting on your stove doesn't get the butter sauce hot, you can turn it up to medium. But, keep an eye on it, so it doesn't burn.
