3-Ingredient Crock Pot Coca-Cola BBQ Chicken
The first time I shredded this chicken right in the Crock Pot, my kitchen smelled like sweet barbecue and that classic Coca-Cola caramel, and my boys magically appeared to “check if it was ready.” This Crock Pot Coca-Cola BBQ chicken is made with chicken breasts, a can of Coca-Cola, and a bottle of barbecue sauce, then cooked on low for 8 hours until it pulls apart with a fork. I usually pile it on buns for sandwiches, and if I have them, I’ll do a quick side of coleslaw, beans, or chips.
Here’s what I learned after making it more than once: it actually holds up really well for leftovers, but only if you store it with the sauce. The one time I shredded it and drained off some liquid because I thought it looked like “too much,” the chicken dried out in the fridge the next day. When I leave it right in that sauce, it reheats juicy and tastes even better after it sits overnight.

How I Make Coca-Cola Chicken In The Slow Cooker
I use a 6-quart slow cooker for this recipe. It gives the chicken enough room so it cooks evenly and shreds without a fight.

Add the chicken breasts to the slow cooker. Pour the barbecue sauce and the full 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola over the chicken, then cover and cook on low for 8 hours. I personally love sweet BBQ sauce in this recipe. But you are pouring in a can of Coca-Cola, so if you don’t want it that sweet, stick to regular BBQ sauce.

After it cooks, either keep the chicken whole or shred it in the slow cooker with two forks and stir it back into the sauce. That’s it. And yes, shred it right in the slow cooker. Less mess, and the chicken goes straight back into the sauce where it belongs.
A Few Things I’ve Noticed (So Yours Turns Out Right)
This recipe is beginner-friendly, but a couple of small details make it smoother.
Use The Full 12 Ounces Of Coca-Cola
Don’t eyeball it and don’t swap in “a cup.” I pour in the entire can. Between the Coke and the sauce, you’ll have plenty of liquid for the chicken to cook gently for the full 8 hours.
Keep It On Low For The Full 8 Hours
Chicken breasts can turn tough when they cook too hot for too long. Cooking on low for 8 hours keeps the heat gentle, and that’s what makes shredding easy at the end.
Shred While It’s Hot
When the chicken is hot, it pulls apart quickly with two forks. If you let it cool first, it still shreds, but it takes longer, and you’ll work harder than you need to.

Serving Ideas (The Way We Eat It)
You’ve got options, depending on what you need that day.
- On buns for shredded BBQ chicken sandwiches (I spoon extra sauce right over the top)
- Over rice when I want it to stretch a little further
- Over some of the best mashed potatoes when I want a hearty plate (that sauce is good on potatoes)
If you’re serving sandwiches, you can keep the shredded chicken on the warm setting for a little while and let everyone fix their own.
Make-Ahead, Storage, And Reheating
This is one of those recipes that helps you out tomorrow, too.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator, with the sauce.
- Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a small splash of the sauce or water, only if it looks thick after chilling.
I keep it saucy on purpose, because chicken breasts will soak it up as it sits.

A Quick Note On Substitutions
Since this recipe only uses three ingredients, I keep my swaps very cautious.
- If you want to change the barbecue sauce, you can, but the sweetness level will change depending on the brand. I stick with the same type of sauce once I find one my family likes.
- I haven’t tested this recipe with a different-size Coke, and I don’t adjust the amount. I use the full 12-ounce can every time.
Can You Use This For Other Proteins?
Readers ask this a lot, especially about pork chops. Yes, you can make this with pork! The main change is cooking time. Pork cooks faster than chicken in the slow cooker, so plan on 5 to 6 hours on low instead of 8. You’ll know it’s ready when it shreds easily with a fork, which is the same tender result I’m aiming for with the chicken version.
If you try it with another protein, come back and tell me how it turned out, because I love hearing what’s working in your kitchen.

I have a question about frozen vs thawed. Since I want to make this right away (it looks incredible) but didn’t take out the chicken to thaw. Can I make it with frozen chicken breasts or would I be better off letting them thaw and having this tomorrow?
Also, I’m a Pepsi Zero person sooooo…does the brand of cola matter? I can always nip out to the corner store and get a can of Coke but if it’s already here, I’d like to use that.
Thanks for the recipes this month especially. I’m addicted to using the crock pot and you get a delicious aroma all day long.
I would wait until thawed. I have done plenty with frozen chicken, but it can be an issue, and it’s safer to wait. I think Pepsi Zero is perfect! A reader told me the other day that she used cherry Dr. Pepper and loved it!
You’re welcome, and I am so glad you’re here!
Do you know id sugar free would work for the recipe for diabetics?
I think a sugar-free Coke would work great for this!
Have you tried the Bbq, Coke, Chicken with a beef roast Julie?
Not a huge fan of chicken but a beef roast really sounds interesting. I think of a caramelized bbq sauce on a tender beef roast ready to be shredded.
Yes, and it’s amazing! Give it a try, I bet you would love it! I had a reader say she tried the pork recipe with cherry Dr. Pepper, and she loved it!
