Classic Custard Pie

Egg custard pie is the classic pie and has been around for generations. Plus, it’s one of the easiest pies to make with only six ingredients.

With a creamy custard center and a crunchy sugary top, the pie is perfect for Thanksgiving dinner, as well as Christmas dinner.

The rich and decadent delicious dessert can be made with a homemade pie crust or store-bought crust.

  • Pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

Full recipe with measurements and printable instructions is listed at the bottom of the page in the recipe card.

How To Make Southern Egg Custard Pie

  1. Poke holes in a thawed pie crust with a fork.
  2. Bake the crust for about 10 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs to a medium bowl and beat.
  4. Next, add the sugar, half and half, salt, and nutmeg and mix well.
  5. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and place the pie crust on top.
  6. Pour the pie mixture into the crust and cover the edges with a pie shield.
  7. Bake for 50-55 minutes and allow the pie to cool for one hour in the refrigerator.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Uncooked pie crust with holes from a fork.

Grab your unbaked pie crust and poke a few holes in the bottom of the crust, as well as the sides of the pie pan with a fork. This will keep the crust from bubbling up while baking.

Before poking the holes, make sure the unbaked crust is at room temperature and not still frozen.

You can also use a homemade pie crust recipe with shortening and butter for a flaky crust. (This is my favorite pie crust recipe).

Bake the crust for 10 minutes at 400-degrees and set aside.

Once you bake the crust turn the temperature down to 325-degrees Fahrenheit.

As a side note, some people like to use pie weights while cooking the crust, as opposed to poking holes. Either way will work great.

Cooked pie crust

After the crust cools a little, place a pie shield around the edges of the crust, or use some tin foil to cover them.

This will help keep the edges of the pie from burning while it bakes.

I like to line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set the pie crust on top so that if the custard mixture seeps over while it bakes it won’t get on the bottom of my oven.

Eggs in a large bowl.

Add the eggs to a medium bowl and beat.

Pouring half and half into a bowl with beaten eggs

Pour the half and half into the bowl and combine with eggs.

The half and half is going to help make the pie creamy and give it a rich flavor.

Pouring salt into a large bowl.

Next, add the salt to the mixing bowl.

Adding ground nutmeg to a large bowl.

Add the ground nutmeg to the bowl.

I used nutmeg that I bought on the seasoning aisle at the grocery store, but you can also use fresh ground nutmeg for this recipe.

Pouring sugar into a bowl with egg custard pie ingredients

Finally, pour the sugar into the bowl and mix the ingredients together.

Pour the custard egg mixture into the crust and bake for 50-55 minutes at 325-degrees Farenheit. The pie will be a little bit golden brown on top when it’s done baking.

TIP: Place the pie crust, with the aluminum foil around the edges, on top of a baking sheet before pouring the custard mixture into the pie. That way, you’re not having to lift the pie again with the ingredients and chance it spilling over the edge while you move it.

Baked egg custard pie on the counter.

Once the pie bakes, refrigerate for about one hour.

You can sprinkle a little more ground nutmeg right on top of the pie.

Keep pie refrigerated if you don’t eat it all up, first.
