Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls with Buttermilk and a powdered sugar icing are a cinch to make and a treat to eat. Chances are, you have all of the ingredients in the house. These are the best cinnamon rolls that don't require yeast, and are budget-friendly.

Ingredients

Cinnamon Rolls

  • 3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 stick butter softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. milk

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

    Cinnamon Rolls

    • Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to a mixing bowl. Mix together.
    • Add the shortening and mix together until the mixture resembles crumbs.
    • Pour the buttermilk into the mix and mix together.
    • Knead on the counter (or in a mixer with a dough hook) for 3-4 minutes.
    • Roll out until the dough is about 1/4-inch thick.
    • Spread the softened butter all over the dough.
    • Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle all over the dough.
    • Roll up and slice into 2-inch pieces.
    • Place in a greased baking dish and bake for about 30 minutes or until it's no longer doughy.

    Icing

    • Add the powdered sugar to a bowl or measureing cup.
    • Add the milk and mix together.
    • Pour over warm cinnamon rolls.
